Chiang's Gourmet

Monday, October 30, 2006 11:52 AM
Rating (loved it!) (is a favorite)
Notes
The best Chinese food you'll find outside of chinatown, without having to go to Vancouver.  Weekends at brunch-time they have shau-bing you-tiao and soybean milk, a rarity outside of Chinatown.

All other times, they have excellent dishes, duck (zang ca ya), sour cabbage and fish soup (suan cai yu tang), shanghai-style shaven noodles with pork and mushrooms (shanghai cao nian gao), on-and-on...

This place ain't no secret tho, and they are usually short-staffed, so be prepared to wait if you come and rush hour.  The owners are very friendly, and if you look Chinese, they expect (and appreciate) that you speak Chinese to them, which is always good practice!

Hmm, guess I better not go without a Chinese speaker with me then. :)

Chiang's actually has two different menus--one for people who look/sound like they know what good food is, and one for people who look/sound like me.  (Does the Spanish word "gringa" have a Chinese equivalent?)

Thanks a lot, Kevin.  So, next time I go to Chiang's, I'll just ask for the Gweilo Menu--the one without jellyfish salad and cubed pork gelatin.

And I'll join you, because I sure as hell can't read the Chinese menu either.
