oh man, i was thinking about the nook when it was $249, but now b&n just dropped the price of their nook (a new wifi only version) to $149. I've heard great things about the nook.
http://www.techbargains.com/news_displayItem.cfm/213035
- 7.7 inches x 4.9 inches x 0.5 inches & weighs in at 11.2 ounces
- 5" E-Ink display w/ Vizplex technology (looks like the physical pages in a normal book because it displays real ink particles...just electronically)
- second 3.5" color touchscreen LCD display for control, navigation, and contextual buttons
- holds battery charge for you to read up to 10 days, recharges in 3.5hrs
- 2GB internal storage + MicroSD card support (up to additional 16GB)
- FREE ATT Wireless 3G Internet(on the $199 model) + 802.11b/g Wifi capability
- support for EPUB, e-reader formats, PDFs, MP3s, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, and more
- share titles with your friends... they can "borrow" entire books that you have purchased for 14 days!
i wonder how terrible the "virtual" keyboard is to type on though. they just added a web browser to the software, so was thinking the nook would make for kinda a super cheap super long battery life tablet PC, since it will be able to do browsing and email over wifi... in the cleanroom, i'm really feeling the need for a tablet... anyone own a nook and have feedback? i wonder if the kindle will drop in price shortly too. i guess this is one reason i can like apple (i'm pretty sure this price drop wouldn't have happened without the ipad, but i have no interest in the ipad with its bright screen and short battery life, i want e-ink for relaxing reading...)
Back Talk
hmm - the comment i was replying to disappeared. strange

It sux. Get an iPad, I heard they're really cool.
wow free 3G? I'll hafta look now...
Get to a B&N and try one out if you're really interested. I tried out the Sony reader at Borders a couple of months ago and while you may think I'm biased :) I really wasn't impressed. It looks kind of like a black and white LCD from 20 years ago, and just turning the page (or refreshing the display *at all*) takes literally a second or two while the whole page flashes black. The benefits are the things are really thin and light and as you mentioned they have crazy long battery life.
How's B&N's eBook selection compared to Amazon's? That should be a factor too, assuming you can't get Amazon eBooks on the Nook. (FWIW, every eBook retailer has an iPad app :)
And I don't really understand how it can have a web browser unless it's in the tiny LCD portion of the device. Because really if it's eInk like the one on the Sony reader, the refresh speed is literally too slow for *anything* but reading a book (and who wants to browse the web in black and white?).
Finally, and most importantly, you don't get those super slick page turny animations that I know Jet was secretly so impressed by. ;D
As for free 3G, Dan, I think that's probably just for downloading books. Kindle has the same thing.
oh poor kevin, cognitive dissonance doesn't allow him to recognize the possibility that the ipad is just an expensive toy, because after shelling out so much money for it it simply _has_ to be worth it!
no, actually i do recognize the ipad's strength (web browsing, apps, speed), but the primary reasons i don't want it are the bright screen (when going to bed, your circadian rhythms really get messed up by looking at a light producing screen, rather than a passive screen like the e-ink. i have enough problems sleeping and don't need bright lights shining in my eyes just before trying to sleep...). also, the battery life of the nook is around 10 days - from my understanding, the screen doesn't require any active power after creating the display of something. and of course, price. at $149, i can upgrade year or so at least 2 times before paying as much as the ipad...
but i agree with kevin's feedback, to go test one out. i will and report back, but any friends feedback can still be as useful as a test in a store.
LOL, cognitive dissonance...I've tried more eReaders and iPads than you, buddy. You're the one who said you wanted a tablet. An e-reader is not a tablet, and never will be until eInk displays take a huge leap forward.
But don't take my word for it...

Though once you buy one and tell me how great it is reading on a display that looks like it came from 1992, at least I can tell you about your cognitive dissonance. :)
funny, i just tried the Nook last weekend while shopping for F-day, and considered it for my dad... but ended up walking away fast. It SUCKED. Black and white screen = lame. Shitty feel to the page turn buttons. Static-y DELAY between page turns too... takes like a second which feels slightly "broken." Other features slow to load. Controls aren't intuitive (like how do you skip to a page?) And it doesn't really do anything except books... while the iPad does a million more things. And, it's ugly. Huge ripoff, IMO... B&N should give them out for like $20 because it makes people purchase their books!
edit: i just read kevin's review... ha, yep, the shitty page turning, man! totally agree!
interesting moleesa, i wonder if the one you tried had version 1.4 on it (apparently the page turning time was reduced to about 1/3 of what it formerly took), and they added a "goto page #" which many people had been complaining that they didn't have before...
still, i think i probably won't get one, it doesn't sound quite ready yet...but will probably check out when i get the chance...
I dunno what version i tried, but the dude showing it to me was all defensive of the page turning time, saying that every other ebook player out there has the exact same delay. Ha, not true, cuz i played with kevin's iPad and it doesn't have that annoying delay. What about amazon's... the kindle? that one have better reviews?
