Keeping your linux distros straight

Friday, August 26, 2005 6:07 PM
Just for those who don't already know about it, this is a great website with updates on all the different linux flavors -
http://distrowatch.com/
As you can see on the right side, Ubuntu has rapidly vaulted to the #1 place for visits to the distrowatch website, wich is probably a decent measure of "home user" installations of Ubuntu.  I am now running Ubuntu and highly recommend it to all.  The Unofficial Ubuntu Guide http://ubuntuguide.org/  also rocks and the community behind Ubuntu is awesome.  Just my 2 cents on my favorite distro.

I've got to say that I've used Ubuntu and like it, but I always find myself returning to Debian. I'm thinking about defecting in favor of LFS, though.

Personally, I'm a gentoo man. Emerge for the win.

LFS, is that linux from scratch, right? pardon my ignorance. As for gentoo, I don't have all that compiling from source in me, from the Criticism section of the wiki entree on Gentoo, which summarized my problem with it... "Gentoo is also criticised for its long installation process, sometimes taking days on older hardware. One of the other interesting debates commonly held is the binary versus source packaging, Gentoo using the latter by default. Source packagers claim that binaries are slower and less customizable, while binary packagers retort that some packages take days to compile and are incompatible with the needs of many users who require quick software installation."

LFS is linux from scratch, yes. it comes in a few formats: html, paper, and plain text. instructions to install from an existing linux installation. dowload the packages, and compile them by hand. none of this front end (apt-get/emerge/pkgtool) crap to help you.

./configure;make;make install

i'm lazy (as i've mentioned elsewhere), so i tend to use debian (or debian offshoots). install quickly, try out the new KDE, remove the KDE packages because, well, it's too big and kludgy for my computer (same for Gnome).
