Book Reviews: East of Eden

I found it depressing, too, but I find all of Steinbeck's novels depressing.  I actually liked this one the most of all his that I've read (which, granted, have only been about 3).  I think part of my problem is I don't like reading books that take place in that time period.  It's just not interesting to me.  And also that particularly depressing books aren't very enjoyable to me.

Simply great Steinbeck.

I know everyone loves this book, but I found it incredibly depressing.  I had to stop 3 times because it was so awful.  It's Steinbeck and all, but it's depressing and huge which means ages of feeling like you've been emotionally dragged through the mud.  Read Cannery Row or Travels with Charlie -- which was better received anyway.
